Labeling AI-generated content is a core requirement under Article 50(4) of the EU AI Act. This guide covers practical approaches for labeling text, images, and video on your WordPress site. For the regulatory background, see our Article 50 explainer, and for the full compliance overview, see our EU AI Act compliance guide.

## What Needs to Be Labeled?

Under Article 50(4), deployers of generative AI must clearly label two types of content ([European Commission](https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/faqs/transparency-obligations-under-article-50-ai-act)):

1. **Deepfakes** — AI-generated or manipulated image, audio, or video that resembles existing persons, objects, places, entities, or events and would falsely appear authentic
2. **AI-generated or manipulated text** published to inform the public on matters of public interest — unless it has undergone genuine human review or editorial control

For text, three criteria must be met cumulatively: the text must be published, informative to the public, and about matters of public interest. Matters of public interest include politics, public administration, justice, fundamental rights, public security, public health, environmental protection, consumer safety, and economic, financial, political, scientific, or cultural developments relevant to public debate.

## Labeling Requirements

Labels must be:

- **Clear** — Unambiguous about what the content is
- **Distinguishable** — Visibly separate from the main content
- **Understandable** — Comprehensible to the average person
- **Perceivable** — Detectable without requiring special tools or dedicated actions by the viewer

For deepfakes, you cannot rely solely on machine-readable marks embedded by the AI provider. A visible, human-perceivable label is also required ([European Commission](https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/faqs/transparency-obligations-under-article-50-ai-act)).

## How to Label AI-Generated Text

## Manual approach

For each AI-generated or AI-assisted post or page, add a visible disclosure. Options include:

- **In-content notice** — A note at the beginning or end of the article stating: “This article was generated with AI assistance” or “Portions of this content were AI-generated.”
- **Metadata field** — Use a custom field in WordPress to record the AI status (fully AI-generated, AI-drafted and edited, human-written with AI assistance) and display it via a template tag or shortcode.
- **Badge or tag** — Display a visual badge (e.g., “AI-Generated” or “AI-Assisted”) near the title or in the byline area.

The label should clearly state the level of AI involvement. A four-state classification is a practical model:

1. 100% human-generated
2. AI-assisted (human-written with AI tools for editing, research, or suggestions)
3. AI-drafted and human-reviewed
4. Fully AI-generated

If the content falls under the human review exemption (AI-drafted, substantively reviewed by a qualified person with editorial authority), labeling may not be required — but you should document the review process.

## Automated approach

WordPress plugins can automate the labeling process. MegaGovern, for example, offers:

- **Manual post classification** with four states (Free tier)
- **Bulk legacy post declaration** for retroactively classifying existing content (Free tier)
- **AI Smart Scan** with sentence-level probability analysis (Pro tier) — automatically analyzes text to estimate the likelihood of AI generation

Other plugins like [Legalithm](https://wordpress.com/plugins/legalithm-ai-act) and [AIM Transparency](https://wordpress.org/plugins/aim-transparency/) also offer per-post AI text labeling. For a full comparison, see our best AI disclosure plugins guide.

## How to Label AI-Generated Images

AI-generated images require both visible labels and preserved machine-readable provenance.

## Visible labeling

- **Overlay badge** — Place a “AI-Generated” badge directly on the image or as an overlay
- **Caption** — Add a caption below the image stating it was AI-generated
- **Alt text** — Include AI-generation status in the alt text for accessibility

## Machine-readable provenance

AI image providers (e.g., DALL-E, Midjourney) may embed provenance metadata. Preserve this:

- **IPTC/XMP metadata** — Industry-standard fields for image provenance
- **C2PA (Content Authenticity Initiative)** — Cryptographic content credentials
- **Invisible watermarks** — Embedded in the image pixels, surviving re-encoding

Check that your WordPress image optimization plugins don’t strip this metadata. Some compression tools remove EXIF and XMP data to reduce file size — configure them to preserve provenance information.

MegaGovern’s Pro tier includes an EXIF & C2PA image scanner that verifies whether images carry provenance data. See [megagovern.com/pricing](https://megagovern.com/pricing/) for current features.

## How to Label AI-Generated Video and Audio

Video and audio labeling follows similar principles:

- **Visible watermark or label** — Burn a visible “AI-Generated” watermark into the video or display it as an overlay
- **Audio disclosure** — For AI-generated audio or voice, include a spoken disclosure at the beginning
- **Description and metadata** — State AI generation in the video description, tags, and metadata fields
- **Machine-readable marks** — Preserve any provider-embedded marks in the file

For deepfakes specifically, disclosure must happen no later than the viewer’s first exposure to the content. The label must be perceivable without the viewer needing to take any special action.

## The Human Review Exemption

AI-generated text does not need to be labeled if it has undergone genuine human review or editorial control. However, this exemption is defined narrowly ([European Commission](https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/faqs/transparency-obligations-under-article-50-ai-act)):

**Human review** requires:

- Deliberate examination of the substance of the content
- Conducted by one or more natural persons with relevant knowledge and professional judgment
- Examples: academic peer review, professional validation chains

**Editorial control** requires:

- A responsible editorial entity (e.g., an editor-in-chief) with authority to approve, alter, or reject the content
- Decisions based on substantive grounds, including fact-checking and source verification

**What does NOT qualify:**

- Superficial checks
- Solely formal checks
- Procedural checks
- Spell-checking
- Grammatical correction

If you claim the exemption, document who reviewed the content, their qualifications, and the review process.

## Best Practices

1. **Be consistent** — Apply labels uniformly across all AI-generated content
2. **Be specific** — State the level of AI involvement (fully generated vs. assisted vs. drafted-and-reviewed)
3. **Be visible** — Don’t hide labels in metadata alone; ensure they’re perceivable
4. **Be timely** — Apply labels before publishing, not after
5. **Document everything** — Keep records of what was labeled, when, and how
6. **Preserve provenance** — Don’t strip machine-readable marks from AI-generated content

## Tools to Help
